Vienna's two big October dates both close the roads. Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 3 has no festival parking lots, only a shuttle and bike parking. The Halloween Parade on Wednesday, Oct. 28 shuts parts of Maple Avenue in stages, starting at 1 p.m., and by 6:30 p.m. even the business driveways are closed. That makes the useful October map the few blocks you can walk, and those blocks have changed since last fall. Two treat shops have closed on Maple Avenue East, and four new places have opened along the corridor since June.
Church Street on Oct. 3 Is Built for Arriving Without a Car
Vienna Oktoberfest runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. Admission is free, and the festival covers Church Street, Dominion Street, Mill Street and the Town Green. Patch's Sept. 17 preview called this the 17th anniversary and said it would be the biggest one yet, with more vendors, more food, three stages and free children's activities.
Plan your arrival first. The Vienna Ledger reported on Sept. 18 that the festival has no event parking lots of its own. Organizers point cyclists to bike parking by the W&OD Trail. A free shuttle runs from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and stops at:
- Vienna Metro North
- James Madison High School
- Ayr Hill and Dominion
- The W&OD Trail at Church Street
Uber and Lyft drop-off is at 215 Mill Street NE.
The Ledger also noted on Sept. 18 that road-closure details hadn't been posted yet. The festival map on the organizer's site still carries a "2025 MAP" label. If you live near Church or Dominion, check the Oktoberfest site and the Town's event page before Friday night rather than relying on last year's routes.
Who's pouring, cooking and playing
The beer and wine garden sells tickets at $8 each or four for $30. Caboose Brewing, Norm's Beer & Wine/Craft & Cellar and Vienna Vintner are pouring, and the list includes Bear Chase, Fair State and Son of a Bear Ciders. The food court lineup is mostly local:
- Caffe Amouri
- Carnegie Diner Vienna
- Chick-fil-A Vienna
- German Gourmet
- Hawk & Griffin
- Istanbul Kitchen
- Little Austria
- Mama Spice
- Pure Pasty Co.
- Vienna Moose Lodge
The three stages each have their own crowd. Here's the schedule as posted:
| Stage | Lineup |
|---|---|
| Main Stage | Lost Lederhosen at 11 a.m., John Stevens Polka Band at 1 p.m., Ocho de Bastos at 4 p.m. |
| Center Street Stage | Brandon Kennedy at 11 a.m., Falling Home at 1 p.m., Luke James Shaffer at 3 p.m. |
| Town Green Stage | Vienna Singing Princesses, Cuppett's Performing Arts Center, Born2Dance, The Great Zucchini, Vienna Dance Academy, a Family Dance Party, Rocknoceros |
The Main Stage Beer Garden has three set moments: the Burgermeister swearing-in and keg tapping at 11 a.m., the stein-holding contest at 3 p.m., and the best-dressed awards at 4 p.m. With Lost Lederhosen also on at 11, getting there by opening time covers both.
Maple Avenue Has Been Reshuffling Since June
The festival and the parade use different streets, but the walk between them runs along Maple Avenue. This year's changes there are specific enough to be worth knowing.
| Address | What changed | When |
|---|---|---|
| 521 Maple Avenue West | Whistler's Ice Cream Extraordinaire opened in the former Molly's Yogurt space | June 5 |
| 421 Maple Avenue East | Bakeshop opened its third Virginia bakery and cafe | June 20 |
| 256 Maple Avenue East | Shipley Donuts opened across Maple from Texas Donuts | June 22 |
| 128 Maple Avenue West | Mashahweez Shawarma and Grill soft-launched in the former Maru Korean Cuisine space | Aug. 19 |
| 233 Maple Avenue East | ViVi Bubble Tea closed its Glyndon Plaza location | Aug. 30 |
| 203 Maple Avenue East | Crumbl Cookies closed after six years in Vienna Marketplace | Mid-September |
Two of the closures have a story behind them. Crumbl opened at 203 Maple Avenue East in early September 2020 as the chain's first Virginia location, so Vienna had it longer than anywhere else in the state. FFXnow reported that the chain sent the closure notice to loyalty members in the week of Sept. 16. It is steering Vienna customers to its Birch & Broad location in Falls Church, at 1106-A West Broad Street. ViVi Bubble Tea opened in May 2024. Owner Yaya Zhang told FFXnow:
"We tried our best and made many efforts to improve the situation, but unfortunately, we were not able to turn things around."
ViVi's points, rewards and gift cards still work at the Fairfax City cafe at 9974 Main Street.
The openings change where you'd stop. Shipley now sits across Maple from Texas Donuts, which puts two donut shops facing each other on Maple East. Mashahweez plans to phase in Iraqi dishes, including shawarma, falafel and kababs. On Church Street, Bards Alley is still at 110 Church Street NW. It plans to move to 103 Church Street NE, with the timing estimated for early 2027.
Oct. 28 Shuts Maple Avenue in Stages
The Halloween Parade has run since 1946. It now happens rain or shine on the Wednesday before Halloween, and this year that's Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. The route runs along Maple Avenue from Branch Road to Center Street. The 2026 theme is "Haunted History: 250 Years of America," and the grand marshal is Mark Keam, a former Virginia state lawmaker who now leads the Korean American Institute. The Town's participant FAQ describes the parade as about a half-mile long and about 90 minutes from start to finish.
This is the second year of full-route fencing. The Town's 2026 page still labels the temporary metal fencing on both sides of Maple as "New." The Town's own Oct. 17, 2025 release shows the same fencing in place for last year's parade, for safety, a bigger seating area and closer views. Before 2025, the barriers only went around the planter boxes. At a March 17, 2025 work session, Town Council members questioned whether the full-route fencing was excessive. The plan that went forward left gaps along the curbs for spectators' chairs. The Town's adopted FY 2025–26 budget included funding for parade safety fencing.
The fencing is also why the closures start so early. Here's the posted sequence:
- 1 p.m. Mill Street closes from Church Street NE to Maple Avenue E.
- 2 p.m. The curbside lanes on Maple close in both directions between Center Street and Branch Road. The two center lanes and business driveways stay open until 6:30 p.m.
- 4:45 p.m. Locust, Hine, Welles, Pine, Berry, Branch Road SE, Cabin Road, Branch Circle and Charles Street close.
- 5 p.m. Center Street S closes from Maple to Elm, and so does Locust Street from Center to Cottage.
- 6 p.m. Cherry Street SE closes from Center to Park.
- 6:30 p.m. Business driveways along the route close. Maple Avenue closes from Lawyers Road NW to Berry Street SE, and so do the connectors to Church Street at Center, Park and Glyndon.
Most side streets reopen when the parade ends, between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Maple, the Center Street segments and the 6:30 p.m. connectors stay closed until about 11 p.m. In practice, a dinner reservation on Maple that night is a walk-in plan after 6:30, and the drive home has to wait until roughly 11.
The details families ask about
Children and others in costume can march without registering. Families meet at 6 p.m. at United Bank, 374 Maple Avenue E. Free goodie bags donated by local businesses go out starting at 7:15 p.m. at the Caffi Field Pitching Lanes on Cherry Street SE, between the Vienna Community Center and the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. Chairs and spectators aren't allowed in the street at any point, before, during or after the parade. Accessible parking is on Church Street between Dominion Road and Park Street, in front of Freeman Store and Vienna Presbyterian Church.
If your kids want a calmer warm-up, Halloween on the Green runs Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Town Green, 144 Maple Avenue East. It's eleven days before the parade, on the same Town Green that is part of the Oktoberfest footprint.
Planning the Month Around Your Block
Vienna's October has three dates on two streets. The Town Green at 144 Maple Avenue East connects them. Oktoberfest closes Church Street and the streets around it for one Saturday, with no event parking lots. The parade closes Maple in six steps over a weekday afternoon. Both reward a plan that starts from where you live. If you're near Ayr Hill and Dominion or the W&OD crossing at Church Street, the Oktoberfest shuttle stops nearby. If you're south of Maple near Locust, Berry or Branch, your street closes at 4:45 p.m. on Oct. 28.
The stops along the way are different this year. On parade night, the walk might include a scoop at Whistler's, a box from Bakeshop or Shipley, or dinner at Mashahweez. The Vienna Marketplace storefront at 203 Maple Avenue East and the Glyndon Plaza space at 233 Maple Avenue East are now empty.
