Springfield comprises 7.9 square miles. The city is approximately 12 miles Southwest of Washington DC. Springfield is located in the lower left quadrant of the Capital Beltway and the I-395 junction. Due to the ease in which one can travel from the junction to all of Northern Virginia, this interchange was affectionately given the name “The Mixing Bowl.”

Rail is what first brought people to this rural town way back in the 1800s. However, once settlers realized how fertile Springfield’s soils were (thanks to the area’s plentiful streams), the city became a hotspot for tobacco plantations.

Those seeking public transport have many options. For rail travel, Springfield is served by the Metro’s Blue Line via the Franconia-Springfield station. Those interested in bus transport may opt for the Fairfax connector bus.
